Dragon fruit anyone?

dragonfruit.JPGTired of the same fruits? Looking for an exotic and mysterious looking fruit to surprise your guests?

This strange looking fruit is covered with pink scales and grows on a cactus vine. Although it taste similar to kiwifruit, a good grade dragon fruit (also known as Pitaya) will taste much better and sweeter.

If you’re thinking of trying them, I suggest you ask the grocers the color of the flesh. The best Dragon Fruit has beetroot-colored red flesh while other variations of it have bland white or yellowish content. Avoid those.

I don’t suggest you juice it because it just taste good on it’s own. Just remember not to smile while eating because the small black seeds will definitely stuck between your teeth.

How To Eat It?

No, it’s not a stupid question. Some people do not know what to do with this fruit, so let’s see how you can enjoy it.

  1. Trim the scales surrounding the Dragon Fruit.
  2. Cut it into wedges like you’d do an apple
  3. Cut each wedges into 2-3 sections, be careful not to cut the skin as well.
  4. Eat straightaway. Just make sure you don’t wear white because the fruit “bleeds”.

This fruit is believed to help you fight stress related disorders and is used as folk remedy for diabetes, rheumatism or to treat poor eyesight.

A simply delicious fruit!

Children's National Medical Center, US (26 Nov) - A lot of parents were shocked when fruit juices were blamed for obesity among children.

Unfortunately, printed media which were responsible for reporting the findings had misled the public by not stating that such effects were found only on commercial juices and not freshly prepared juice.

Two new studies, published in the journal Pediatrics, had confirmed that there is no connection between children's' weight and consuming reasonable amounts of pure fruit juice.

One of the studies, from Baylor College of Medicine, concluded that after several years of studies from a national sample of preschoolers; consumption of 100-percent juices has no weight effect.

The other study, also published in Pediatrics, found there was no connection between juice consumption and body weight among normal weight children.

Advising parents to omit sugar from their juices, the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines have also recommended a daily juice level consumption for children.

It is recommended that you serve 1/2 cup juice for children 1 to 5 years old and 1 and 1/2 cups juice for older children.
