Many people buy a rockmelon (also known as cantaloupe) that is as solid as a rock, thinking that it's the perfect buy.

Don't be fooled. Here's how you should buy and store those rockmelons.

When Buying:

  • The melon must be quite soft, and "give in" slightly when squeezed.
  • Use your nose - ripe cantaloupe smells sweet.
  • Shake it and if you hear anything it's over ripe.
  • Look for one that has no stems. One that does are picked early.

When Storing:

  • An unripe rockmelon should be kept at room temperature for 2-3 days.
  • If you're not using the whole fruit, leave the seeds intact in the unused parts. Wrap and put it in the fridge.

The best place to look for fresh rockmelon is at the roadside stands, a place where they are picked fresh.
